Lawrence Russell hails from Hamburg, New York. He is a 1979 graduate of St. Francis High School in Buffalo, New York. He has earned an Associates Degree from Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach, Va. He is currently completing his Bachelors Degree in Management at The College for Lifelong Learning in Littleton, NH. to graduate in 2006.

He enlisted in the U.S .Navy on 5 July 1979 and graduated from Recruit Training Center Great Lakes, ILL on 5 September 1979. His sea duty assignments have included Patrol Squadron 23 (Jan 81-Apr 85), Fighter Squadron 33 (Oct 87- Aug 90), USS SAIPAN (LHA-2) (Mar94- Apr97) and USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN-69)(Apr 00-Apr02) where he retired as a Master Chief Petty officer with full military honors. Shore duty assignments have included AK “A” school in Meridian MS (Sep79- Nov 79), NAS Oceana Supply Department(Nov 79-Dec80),AIMD Oceana (Apr85-Apr87), NAS Oceana ASD(Aug90-Jan91), Medium Attack Wing One(Jan91-Dec93), FTC Norfolk and Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia (Jan94-May94) and Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 8(May97-Mar00).

Master Chief Russell wore the Meritorious Service Medal(1), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal(4), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal(4), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle “E”, Good Conduct Medal(6), National Defense Medal(2), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal(2), Armed Forces Service Medal(2), NATO Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Medal(7).
